Do you have a sister club?
You never know where Rotary takes you! A few years ago a member of the Rotary Club of Holroyd (D9675), Rob Feil, was working on a short term contract at George Town, Tasmania. Rob immediately looked up the local Rotary club and attended one of their meetings and so a friendship began between George Town Rotary Club and Holroyd Rotary Club (D9675).
The relationship is such that Rotarians and partners from each club travel to the other club each alternate year for a week of good hospitality but also to undertake a project with their host club. So far, each club has visited the other club on two occasions.
This year, Rotarians and partners from George Town club visited Holroyd in May. After a short trip to the Hunter Valley vineyards, the touring group and some Holroyd Rotarians and partners returned to the Merrylands/Greystanes area to undertake a project which involved the renovation and extension to a large garden at the Greystanes High school. This school is located on several hectares and has only one person to maintain the whole school. Holroyd Rotarians are involved in a mentoring programme at the school and were aware of some of the needs of the school. One particular need was a large garden which required pine sleepers to be laid on a level base and then mulch placed in the garden. The club applied for and was successful in gaining a $500 community grant from the local government authority. Preparatory work was done by a community member and the members of the two clubs came together and completed the garden in a half a day.
Quite a unique project as it involved two Rotary clubs, one from interstate; a local high school and the local government authority.
